Camper Girl is a coming-of-age adventure novel written by Glenn Erick Miller. Shannon Burke's eighteenth birthday celebrations go up in smoke when she receives news of her beloved Aunt Rebecca's demise due to cancer. She is further taken aback to find her aunt left her an old Toyota Dolphin alongside a letter and a map in her will. Feeling purposeless after losing her job, Shannon decides to heed Rebecca's advice and undertake a solo trip to the Adirondack Mountains, following the instructions on Rebecca's map. On her travels, she receives aid from old friends of Rebecca and slowly starts acclimatizing herself to survive in the wild. As she reaches the endpoint of her journey, Shannon discovers something about herself that will change her life forever.
Camper Girl is a heartwarming story about self-discovery and growing up that readers will heartily enjoy. Author Glenn Erick Miller brilliantly portrays the insecurities faced by teenagers while growing up. Shannon's transformation from a directionless teenager without purpose to a confident and self-sufficient young woman is riveting to read. The narrative is well-paced, which at times feels like a slice-of-life novel. The characters are realistic and relatable. Shannon, in particular, is fully fleshed out. Her relationship with Rebecca seems like the primary driving force behind the narrative. Shannon's thoughts and feelings toward Rebecca feel authentic and heartfelt, and they provide a strong emotional resonance to the story.
