Butterflies Blue: An Interlude in San Juan, Puerto Rico (Chambers Lane Series) by Daniel Maldonado is an intriguing romance novella about moving forward from a painful past. After a turbulent, heart-breaking relationship, Layla Little hopes to move forward and leave the past behind. She goes on a trip to Puerto Rico with Daniel, her new love interest. While things seem promising, Layla is still hurting from her past experience and wants to take things slowly. While in Puerto Rico, she meets her former jealous, abusive boyfriend, Leon. Back in New York, Roland Lark thinks that the beautiful and softly-spoken Layla is the woman for him. Layla, on the other hand, hopes to build a lasting relationship with a man who will respect and love her.
In Butterflies Blue, Daniel Maldonado includes unexpected twists in Layla’s life from the beginning of her trip to Puerto Rico where she meets Leon. The story explores the physical and emotional abuse that Layla suffers in her first relationship. It also explores themes about family and community through Layla’s friends and family. Her friend guides Layla while she makes decisions about her love life. As a victim of physical violence, Layla’s thoughts and perspectives, and Leon’s manipulative, domineering nature offer glimpses into the aspects of an abusive relationship. Other sub-plots involving members of Layla’s family add detail to the story. The book is also unique in its exploration of a relationship that involves older persons. Butterflies Blue by Daniel Maldonado contains interesting characters and unexpected turns.
