A compelling opening in the Lucas Bowman Trilogy, Bumping at Speed by Peter P. Sellers is a crime thriller with powerful characters and a sensational plot. Lucas Bowman enjoys his life and the things he does — playing polo, writing for a newspaper, and doing some investigative work. But it is his passion for investigation that will get him into trouble. An unusual encounter at a polo game with Ronald Burt gets them quickly acquainted with each other. Ronald enlists the services of Lucas, asking him to investigate his wife and his ex-wife, and an infamous mobster, Gaston Alvarez. Lucas doesn’t know what he is getting into, but it won’t be long before he understands that he is dealing with international crime when dead bodies begin to feature in the investigation. His own life hangs in the balance as he gets closer to the truth, and what is most startling is that the man who hired him might have plotted him as a pawn piece in a very deadly crime.
If you’re looking for a page-turner, you’ve got one in Bumping at Speed, a work that is balanced and deft, emotionally charged, and cunningly plotted to keep readers turning the pages and guessing. The protagonist is a compelling character and readers feel for him at the start, perhaps thinking him to be a little too gullible. But the author explores Lucas's human side with intelligence, building him up in a way so that readers will easily connect with him. Ronald Burt is a villain and he plays an indispensable role in the plot. I loved the prose and I enjoyed how the author keeps readers engaged. You can’t escape Peter P. Sellers’s storytelling spell. It grips you and holds you tied to his characters until the last page.
