Bulletproof Decisions: How Executives Can Get it Right, Every Time by Ruben Ugarte is a non-fiction self-help guide on changing leadership perspectives to a strategy better aligned with success. Ugarte offers a uniquely detailed blueprint for how sweeping the scope of the book truly is. Over the course of ten distinct and interconnected chapters, Ugarte deep dives into an intensive single-volume series using anecdotal stories and examples that have, for better or worse, quantifiable results, the reasoning, and the lessons to be learned. A tailored section on what was 'Behind the Decision' and summary are integral parts of each chapter, and the chapters themselves include input on strategies dealing with decisions, the driving forces behind them, prioritizing problems by necessity and committing to their resolution, the three O's, timing, ethics trends, deconstructing a decision and myth-busting, among many other areas.
There is so much to unpack here that I had to set Bulletproof Decisions aside and let the words of Ruben Ugarte marinate for a bit. I'm back now and I'm feeling pretty darn good. The first thing that stood out is the way Ugarte writes for all of those in executive positions, whether you're sitting at a boardroom table that doubles as a breakfast nook with another executive - who also happens to be your spouse - or if you are seated at the pinnacle of a giant multinational corporation with an organizational structure that trickles down into the tens of thousands. No executive is too small and no executive is too big. The decision-making process is the same. I found the three O's framework that encompasses Outcomes, Options, and Obstacles in chapter five to be the most eye-opening. This could very well be hinged on the incredible story of Marvel filing for bankruptcy and then rising back to the ultimate top, but I also found the advice on breaking what you learn down into chunks to be practical on a daily basis. I definitely need to start writing the thought process down so it is visible. This book is compact but the wallop it delivers is massive, and I'd imagine there are many leaders and leaders in the making who will appreciate all that Ugarte brings to the table, wherever that may be.
