"Bringing Home the War" is a biography by Theresa Brandt and a look into the life of the family of a Green Beret Solider while he is at home and when he goes off to war fighting the battles in Iraq. Theresa Brandt writes this book in the first person and we come to know her very well. We feel her joy and her pain and live with her for the thirteen years she lives with the burdens of being a proper Army wife. Theresa and John meet, fall in love, marry, and have a family. When John decides he wants to follow his dream and become a Green Beret he receives full support from his wife. She and the boys live on the base and along with the other Army wives and children bravely see the men off to fight. Life at home is difficult being alone but Theresa follows the Army rules and is the perfect waiting at home wife. When John returns after his first Iraq stay, there are changes in his behavior having seen his friends die and having been responsible for enemy deaths. After several tours of duty John is a very different man with all of the symptoms of a man suffering from PTSD. Theresa takes on the responsibilities of dealing with the ups and downs and happy and sad mood swings that John will constantly have to deal with while still caring for her three young boys. It becomes a very hard and trying day to day existence for the entire family.
"Bringing Home the War" is a very real book with nothing fictional about it. I immediately found myself really liking Theresa and drawn into the story of a friend. The book will shock, upset and infuriate you, it will make you smile and make you cry. It is a view of war showing not the struggle of the battlefields but the sacrifices of the home field. This book is exceptionally worthy of a five star rating in the autobiography category. This was Theresa Brandt’s first book – I sincerely hope it is not her last. Her first person writing style was an attention getter from page one to the very last word. I highly recommend that it must be put high up on everyone’s reading list.
