Well now, this was interesting and most unexpected: I was very curious after reading the intriguing description of Breathless by Yvette M Calleiro. It indicated this was a fairy tale with a difference. The length of this fairy tale is in keeping with most children’s books in that genre, but this isn’t a fairy tale for children. Its genre is paranormal romance, not my usual choice for books, but as I said, I was curious.
To my surprise, I was hooked immediately. The opening pages depicting Silena, the protagonist, as a middle-aged, ignored, and lonely barmaid enviously watching the beautiful women being wooed and bedded by the aristocratic and handsome William were touching. Many women would immediately relate to her. But what Silena does to change her sad situation was so unexpected it was delightful. Oh, to have Silena’s magical powers! Or not! I was enthralled by the possibilities that came to mind once she put a curse on William, but what eventually happened didn’t even occur to me. The unexpected twist brought Breathless to a surprising, yet logical conclusion. Excellent writing.
But then came the next surprise. Calleiro gives us Chapter One of her novel, The One Discovered. Of course, I read it and closed the book, intrigued by that story’s possibilities. Calleiro prepared readers well by giving us Breathless. Her writing is tight, and the easy-flowing dialogue keeps the pace lively and the emotions high. Nice work, Yvette. Clever too!
