In "Breakdown at Clear River," senior Cullen Brewer seems to be the golden boy at Clear River College in West Virginia. He is the starting quarterback in the football team and also student body president. But, things begin to go wrong in the team when an up-and-coming receiver named Dane threatens the friendship of Cullen and his best friend receiver Jordan. Dane is then found dead and the circumstances are highly suspicious. Once star potential, Jordan seems to be getting into tight situations which suggest he may not be forthcoming about his habits to his friend Cullen. Cullen is unable to confide in his widowed and alcoholic father, so he turns to a professor in an attempt to make sense of his involvement in something he does not understand. With the assistance of a student newspaper reporter named Serena, the investigation begins and no one can anticipate what will lie beneath the rocks which must be uncovered in order to solve the mystery.

Eliot Parker develops some interesting characters in this book. I do wish he had dug just a bit deeper and allowed the reader a glimpse into the psychic workings of Cullen, who appeared to be caught between a rock and a hard spot. I didn't feel the angst and anger that should have been forthcoming from the young man given the circumstances into which he was thrust. It almost seemed as if the characters stumbled upon clues rather than actively sought them out at times. And yet, for those who love sports mysteries, this will be an entertaining book.
