Joan Koss has written a Christian devotional entitled "Bowing Before God". There is a separate devotional for a period of forty days. Each devotional details a particular problem or state of mind by the author and it then presents various verses from scriptures to aid the reader in considering God's guidance. The author believed that she initially had the perfect life, with a good husband and wonderful children. But then, things started to fall apart as one child went astray choosing negative friends rather than family values. A son turned to drugs and a daughter was critically injured. Even though the author struggled to maintain strength, her marriage suffered and she felt the depths of depression. It was only through prayer that the author found a reason for being and it was in that spirit that she wrote the devotional.
The devotional is written both as a testament to the belief in God's workings and for the thousands of people who feel life crashing in on them. It is intended to encourage and to lift the spirit so that God's will can be recognized and acted upon. The devotionals speak both of the sins recognized in the scriptures and of the resilience of humankind. One of my favorite devotionals was the one on life as a sitcom. Most of us plan our lives as children and we are sometimes shocked that our lives tend to write their own scripts. When the scripts "go wrong," this is a book you just may want to take off the shelf and read.
