Bort’s People by Alistair Potter is the third book in The Sunset of Magic series. Bort is the last of his kind, the last Trollid. Or is he? Three hundred years ago, his race was kidnapped, stolen away by the Harrowen and now Bort is about to make the journey to see if any had survived. The Counsel of Wizards are behind the mission in an attempt to find out why the Harrowen, supposedly restricted to Mirt, their own home planet, had tried to invade a peaceful planet called Nephus. Bort wants to know if there are any more Trollids on Mirt and, together with Zerphal and Lofti, Bort’s best friend, the dangerous mission to Mirt begins. They face danger and great adventure, but will they make it safely? How did the Harrowen get off Mirt and is Bort truly the last Trollid?
Bort’s People (Book 3: The Sunset of Magic Series) by Alistair Potter is every bit as good as the first two books in the series. Again, it will work as a standalone book, but I would urge any reader to read all of the books in order, just to get a true sense of how magical this world is that Alistair Potter has created. Once again, Alistair Potter comes through with his descriptive prose, leading us deep into a world of magic and mystery, of adventure and danger, a world that will draw you in and hold you fast until the tale is done. As with the other books, I was sorely disappointed when the story ended, simply because I wanted to be back there in that world. The characters are incredibly well developed and the story remains as unique as when it began, three books back. This is a great fantasy tale, one that will delight any reader, young or old, and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to escape from reality for a while, anyone that wants to get involved in an incredibly well-written journey.
