BOBcat Has A Special Tail by Dana P Popoff is a cute children’s book about accepting people as they are, no matter their differences. Popoff cleverly tells this through a story of a bobcat whose tail is different from most other cats. BOBcat arrives at his new home and feels insecure about his tail; he sees it as short and fat compared to the other cats he now lives with. His new home is big and makes him feel as if he won't fit in. He decides to run and hide under a bed where he meets Howie the hedgehog. Howie and BOBcat introduce themselves and BOBcat explains his insecurities and reasons for hiding. Howie reassures BOBcat that he has nothing to worry about because everyone is different and special in their own way. After Howie points this out, BOBcat begins to feel more positive about himself.
This is a cute, educational book for young readers. BOBcat Has A Special Tail made me tear up a little; the story is so compact yet important and informative. I feel that children should be taught at a young age that everyone is different and they should be proud of how they look and embrace every part that makes them who they are. This book uses fun rhymes and illustrations to entertain the young reader and is short and perfect for bedtime reading. Dana P Popoff is an excellent writer for children and I look forward to reading more of her work in the future.
