Blood Renegades by Rosemary A Johns is a classy urban fantasy with stunning and memorable characters, a story that features vampires poised against each other in a deadly conflict. Meet Light, an eccentric character, rebellious and passionate. He is considered a traitor and about to be burned at the stake in fourteen days. Liberty is not the kind of interrogator anyone would love to have, because she shows no mercy, and she will be facing someone who has just the very thing she’s been brought up and trained to hate — treachery. But there is a problem: Liberty can’t help feeling an attraction for Light.
The dynamic force behind Rosemary A Johns’ novel is her ability to create characters that readers can connect with. I am not a fan of novels with werewolves and vampires, after the Twilight Saga, but I care about the characters in this novel because of the greatness of the conflict into which they are pulled. Characterization is just perfect and it shines through in the way Light’s values contradict those of Liberty. The story itself is sweet and dark and the author writes with confidence, provoking sensations in readers that will make their hearts beat even faster. The plot moves at a steady clip, with surprises buried at many turns. I enjoyed the confident writing with descriptions that feature rich content and arresting images. Blood Renegades stands out on many levels, especially the author’s masterful use of contrast and humor. This is a story that will stay with readers long after they are done reading.
