Rosemary A Johns has created a compelling novel that focuses greatly on character, with a huge conflict. The conflict exists on multiple levels, and the internal conflict is one that creates a lot of dynamism in the book. The idea of time, for instance, and the execution of Light within the next few days already create a powerful tension within the protagonist and this means that his actions are determined by what awaits him. The reader is keen to see how he will steer himself out of the problems facing him. Light is a character who caught my attention immediately; he is courageous, free, and a great lover. The writing is wonderful, featuring enticing descriptions and insightful passages that allow the reader to understand the world of the characters better. Blood Renegades is a great read — gripping and entertaining.

Blood Renegades by Rosemary A Johns is the third book in the Rebel Vampires series. This is a book that would appeal most to a mixed audience of adults and young adults who enjoy vampire fiction with a twist. The rebel vampires series is a total role reversal of normal vampire fiction; vampires are the slaves and the humans are the masters. In this world, Light is destined to be burnt at the stake in just fourteen days for the crime of being a traitor and terrorist Renegade (a vampire that hunts the human slavers). Liberty is an interrogator who has spent her whole life learning to despise Renegades, yet something about Light is different. Will Light survive to become the leader his people need him to become to save them, or will he perish by fire.

I read Blood Renegades by Rosemary A Johns without reading the previous books in the series and while that did not detract from my enjoyment of this unique world, I would recommend that all readers read books one and two first. I loved how Rosemary A Johns created such a unique world, this was the first time I have ever read a book where the vampires were the slaves instead of the masters. I loved the role reversal element of the book as it kept me intrigued for the entire read. I have to say that while I really liked Light as a character, Liberty was my favorite. I adored the internal conflict she went through, as she had to balance her hatred of Renegades with what she came to learn about Light. Overall, I greatly enjoyed the book and I plan to check out the previous books in the series.
