In Blood Law by C.J. Smith, the facade of the past is ripped away and a true history is being dragged out into the light. Vampires, werewolves, magic, and all other types of supernatural beasties are coming out of the woodwork to declare their place in the world. The ringleader, Cullen Lancaster, is striving for freedom from the ancient rulers of his kind. He's passionate about his cause, as any movement organizer is, and is willing to do anything possible to make sure his goals are accomplished.
C.J. Smith's writing style is familiar, and much less formal than some books of this nature. You can slip right into Cullen's head as if he's an everyday person. While many creatures of 500+ years would be flummoxed and speak in quaint out-dated phrases, Cullen is modern, advanced, and it's much easier to understand him and his goals because of this. I thought this was an interesting choice that Smith made, and it paid off, at least when it comes to the flow and narrative of the story. This was also well handled because the "stuffed-shirts" who oppose the movement towards revealing themselves to humans are so much more full of stilted, formal dialogue.
I really enjoyed seeing both a thrilling and intellectual entry into the paranormal/urban fantasy genre that asked questions about the movement and didn't rely on a star-crossed romance to turn pages. Blood Law is gritty, dark, and wickedly entertaining, and it will make you think about it long after you finish the last page.
