Gail Meath comes up with another absorbing tale in the Jax Diamond Mysteries series with book 5, Blackjack. Private Investigator Jax Diamond is just back from a stressful vacation when he suddenly has a missing woman's case and a murder investigation on his hands. Additionally, a savvy businessman named Nick Gallo hires his services over stolen artifacts from his cruise ship. Meanwhile, Jax's girlfriend, Laura Graystone, works toward her own Broadway career but, seeing Jax preoccupied with Nick Gallo, delves into the investigation herself alongside a couple of friends. With Ace the German Shepherd as the ever-loyal sidekick, Laura follows the clues. She realizes she is being stalked while Jax discovers an insidious criminal conspiracy, the answers to which he may find at the very orphanage where he grew up.
Gail Meath continues to woo whodunnit lovers with yet another gripping tale of crime, murder, and mayhem. Blackjack is a fast-paced crime drama sleuth story that hooks its claws into you from the first page and keeps your eyes glued to the pages until the last. The plot throws enough curveballs along the way to keep you engaged and looking forward in eager anticipation of what's coming next. Laura plays an even more significant role in this book, and her relationship with Jax continues to evolve. I liked that she and her friends ran their own investigation, and she was the one who brought Jax closer to the truth. All in all, a gem of a book for sleuth story aficionados.
