Black Divinity: Manifesto of the Black Theocracy by Tony Saunders is the third edition of the author's Black Divinity books, offering a peek through the window of New York City street culture for those of us on the outside who have little to no understanding or background, and also those who embody the culture but do not understand the power and history attached to it. This is a non-fiction social science, Afro-centric book of theology and Saunders outlines all it encompasses with intelligent and vivid detail. Leaving nothing out, Saunders makes a link that hails all the way back to the Egyptians and carries it through to today.
Black Divinity: Manifesto of the Black Theocracy is an expertly written and gorgeously composed book that can only come from an author and theologian such as Tony Saunders. Digging deep into personal history and experience, and pairing this with painstaking research resulting in the culmination of two previous additions and this, the third, Saunders delivers the insight necessary to move forward with the strength, grace, power, and distinction that for centuries has been denied by Western writers of theology; those who paint most of what they touch with a white brush. Divinity, God, and the history of all that is religious, spiritual, and philosophical are brought to the forefront with a truthful rendition of what we've never before been taught. This should honestly be required reading in social science and theology classes and I will be diving back into this book immediately with my teenage daughter, who has as much to gain as a woman of color as I do in learning about this history.
