Beyond the Egg: The Real Meaning of Easter by Lindsey Coker Luckey is a children’s picture book targeted at teaching kids the truth about why we celebrate Easter. The story centers around a young girl named Ashlynn when she competes with her friend Joshua to see who can find all the Easter eggs from the egg hunt first. She begins by searching through the kitchen cabinets, which is when she is startled by her parents. Together, they’ve decided that Ashlynn needs a story about Jesus and the true purpose of Easter to put the whole holiday in perspective. The entire book has full-page color illustrations, courtesy of Apple Vert.
The message behind Beyond the Egg is a worthy one that clearly warrants its own book. The story is fun and the lessons learned by the end are very valuable to its target audience. The text describes the importance of Easter perfectly. The story doesn’t show much of Ashlynn's personality before her parents get hold of her and she didn’t seem to be particularly selfish or overly wrapped up in the holiday; she was just a normal child having fun with her friends. Putting this conceptional difference aside, Beyond the Egg by Lindsey Coker Luckey is still a very enjoyable read. The illustrations are beautifully crafted to support the story and definitely add to the feel-good aura of the book. Altogether Beyond the Egg is a well-written educational story, with just enough charm and heartfelt art to keep young readers interested.
