Beyond Death: The Afterlife Series, Book 1 is a paranormal thriller novel written by Deb McEwan. Through a tangled web of circumstances, Claire died in a car accident on her way home from her fiance's apartment. It had been a marvelous evening, even if she had been tipped off by her roommate and best friend, Tash, that Jay's surprise second anniversary dinner would be topped off by a proposal of marriage. Tash had only spilled the beans about it to get Claire to stop being suspicious about her and Jay, but all those suspicions were put to rest that night. Reluctantly, Claire took a cab home early the next morning to get ready for work. Ron, her driver, was only working the night shift for Ken, who just happened to be having an affair with Ron's wife, Val, and found it convenient to keep Ron busy during the evening hours. Claire saw the lights in the distance as Ron was reaching down to find his phone on the floor, and Dave, the truck driver, could do nothing when the taxi kept driving on against the light.
Deb McEwan's contemporary paranormal thriller, Beyond Death: The Afterlife Series, Book 1, is both thought-provoking and entertaining. The author constructs a set of plausible worlds, both the present and the hereafter, and inhabits both with an intriguing set of characters. While I'm automatically averse to the concept of eternal damnation, no matter what the situation, I was pleased to find that McEwan's world-view eschewed, for the most part, the burning pit in favor of the more enlightened concepts of karma and reincarnation. McEwan's characters are well developed, and their relationships are neatly interwoven and fun to follow. I especially enjoyed following Claire and Ron as they explore their after-life circumstances, and Carol and Val as they work to rebuild their lives. Beyond Death: The Afterlife Series, Book 1 is highly recommended.
