Christine Steendam's Betrayed by the Ocean takes place in the late 1600s. The main characters, Catherine and Brant, go their separate ways within the first two chapters. And from that, two parallel story lines delightfully entertain us. After 11 years away from the very thing Brant Foxton loves the most, the sea, he returns. Catherine, a woman for whom he had changed his life, decided to leave him after having concerns about the unrest between Spain and England. So back to the sea he went, devastated. His life changes, based on the decisions he made on board The Black Fox, and "going rogue" instead of being under the king's command. This takes him to a place he never thought he would be. Bloody battles rage and lives are lost during the conflict. Meanwhile Catherine, desperate for news, resorts to listening to all kinds of gossip. Her heart and head are in total turmoil because of the love she had for Brant. This story carries you along, just like the waves Brant had loved. Is faith enough to get you through the hardships? To bring the love back, you have lost? We would certainly hope so.
Betrayed by the Ocean certainly takes you on a roller coaster ride of emotions when following these two through their lives. Being quite the pirate devotee, I love a good adventure, and no story gains my interest and that of my inner child more than tales of far off places, sword fights and dangerous battles on the high seas. The characters are real, and the writing takes you into the world of pirates and the pleasures they desire. If you want an adventure filled with pirates and romance, then this is certainly the book for you. You won't regret it! A nicely written, thoroughly enjoyable swashbuckling pirate romance. I look forward to reading more from Christine Steendam.
