Being Small (Isn't So Bad After All) by Lori Orlinsky is a children’s picture book describing how one day a girl decides to stay home, acting like she is sick. Her mom, however, notes that her temperature is normal and everything else seems to be okay. So she asks what the problem is. The girl goes on to describe the issues she has being small, how it makes her feel less important than the other children. Her mom doesn’t scold but rather spins it positively in ways the daughter has never considered.
The artwork is colorful, detailed, and draws the reader in. Kids of this early age group will love it. The story itself works well, and not because she is bullied for being small. She never is. In fact, she has friends who enjoy being around her. I also appreciated the fact that the mother is not harsh or critical at her daughter but rather takes the time to listen and understand why her daughter feels this way.
I think the close mother/daughter relationship is one of the reasons I like the story as much as I do. The daughter can share her frustrations without judgment and the mom can share her insights without rejection. The end result is an appreciation for the things the girl can do and this helps her accept the way she is. She’s no taller but now her perspective has changed in a positive way. Being Small (Isn't So Bad After All) by Lori Orlinsky is highly recommended.
