Read the stories when you are happy, sad, mad or rip-roaringly drunk and looking for a little entertainment with your night cap before you stumble off to bed.”
Bed Time Stories for Grown Ups by Cearúil Swords is, in essence, stories that are based on everyday life, but through a magical perspective. Swords allows readers to peep through reality described in a fantasy-like depiction, where the cars are carriages, the bad bosses at the offices are ogres, and arguments against salesmen are fantasized as arduous ‘knight versus dragon’ kind of battles. There are also metaphorical stories such as ‘The Lady Who Searched For A New Head’ and ‘The Man Who Tied His Shoelaces’ – stories that readers can interpret and relate to in their own ways.
The writing style is straightforward and clean while the stories' morality varies between subtle and obvious. Simply put, Swords’ book title is self-explanatory. As adults, fairy tales can’t really measure up to our reality that is filled with stressful responsibilities. Bed Time Stories for Grown Ups may be the book that can fill that void. It’s whimsical and it’s something new – definitely a book that my fellow readers can enjoy.
