Rey A. Banda’s children’s book, Bean’s New Home, is inspired by actual events. The book tells the story of Bean, the runt of his litter. To make matters worse, his brothers and sisters had orange stripes, while his fur was black. He felt that he did not fit in. They never played with him, and just left him to his own devices. One day he decided to play on his own and he set off on an adventure. He made a new friend and even got cat-napped! But, it was not a cat-napping. Instead, Bean was rescued by a human called Ryan. It seemed to him that the little kitty had been abandoned. In Ryan’s home, Bean made more friends and was even given his name. He finally found the place where he belonged.
As a sucker for books based on true events, this was a moving story! Along with its beautiful illustrations, Bean’s New Home touches on so many topics including those of abandonment, special needs, and in a sense, displacement. Rey A. Banda said that the purpose of this book was to bring awareness to special needs animals and the care they require. This situation can even be related to humans. There are times when those who require special treatment tend to be pushed aside because we aren’t taught how to manage such situations. I love how Banda shows that with patience and care we can help them feel a little more normal and not limited by their condition. As a cat mama who nursed a runt of the litter, this book holds a special place in my heart.
