I was hooked immediately when I read the opening lines introducing Banister - The New World: An Early American Adventure by Kent Courtney: “I would be honored to tell you the story of my family’s history and our trip to the Americas — the New World. It was an incredible time — incredible loss, incredible grief, and eventually incredible reward.” Set in the 18th century, this is an epic story of what it took to be in the New World and to enjoy its promise, leaving everything behind and being on the turbulent seas for months. Meet the Irish-English couple, Elizabeth and James. They are young and the future is filled with promise, but it is quite different from what they expected when they boarded the Spanish ship and set out for the American colonies. Join them in this adventure and feel their pain of loss, their uncertainty, and their hopes as they seek greener pastures amidst turbulent times.
Kent Courtney is a terrific writer and he has imagined a setting that will have readers mesmerized, a setting that features the changing times in American history, with King George's War, and the early periods of the French and the Indian Wars. It is interesting to imagine what it was like relocating to another country in those times when communication wasn’t as advanced as it is today, and when a journey that could be made today in hours could take months then. The characters are wonderful and the plot is beautifully paced. Banister - The New World: An Early American Adventure is every bit as entertaining as it is interesting, with wonderful historical references, great themes, and awesome, just awesome characters. This book will transport readers into a historic period that is interesting to revisit.
