Liss MacCrimmon is attempting to manage her family's Moosetookalook Scottish Emporium and her upcoming wedding to true love Dan Ruskin. Liss' parents, Vi and Mac, are in town for their daughter's day and Vi is "helping out" with everything and driving poor Liss totally crazy. Liss' wedding is now a part of Moosetookalook's Western Maine Highland Games and its medieval Scottish Conclave. But all is not perfect. Local college professor Leon Palsgrave has written a book whose theme is that a Scot named Henry Sinclair made landfall in the New World in the 1390's, a century before Columbus' famed arrival and protestors are lining up. Palsgrave has planned a staged battle between early Scottish explorers and local Native Americans. The protestors include Native Americans who don't like being portrayed as blood-thirsty savages and another group called Columbus First who don't want to give Henry Sinclair credit for discovering America. Then Palsgrave is found dead, stabbed to death by a medieval sword. Liss does some snooping after her father becomes one of the murder suspects. She finds that Leon Palsgrave was quite the lady's man of years past and that her father yelled at him to stay away from Vi. But who was the real murderer?
"Bagpipes, Brides, and Homicides" is another delightful, well-written entry in Author Kaitlyn Dunnett's mystery series featuring all things Scottish. Liss, Vi, Dan Ruskin, Willa Somener who finds Palsgrave's body, Willa's boyfriend, the red-haired Gabe Treat, and all the other characters in the story are totally believable and fit into the story quite well. The plot proceeds with twists and turns to the end when the route the murderer took through the college's stage to its art gallery and onto Palsgrave's office becomes clear. "Bagpipes, Brides and Homicides" is a first-rate read for mystery fans everywhere.
