Approaching Twi-Night is a sports fiction novel written by M. Thomas Apple. Jonathan "Ditch" Klein had a lot of potential and dreams when he quit in the final year of journalism school for a chance to play in the major leagues. Ten years later, he's back in his hometown and playing a Class A short season, with teammates who are all younger than he is. He's had to contend with a series of problems with his shoulder and then a broken finger that ended up twisted and deformed. Ditch is conflicted by the whole thing, especially because his writing bug doesn't let him forget about that pencil and pad sitting in his room. His high school friend, Mike, wants him to write a column for his paper, the Gladden Fords News, and he has begun to consider giving up his baseball dreams for a real job, but it's easier to think about it than to actually do it.
M. Thomas Apple's contemporary fiction novel, Approaching Twi-Night, is all about baseball, but don't let that discourage you from reading this marvelous story if you're not a baseball enthusiast. The author's writing is eloquent and lyrically beautiful as Ditch surveys the field and town of his youth and considers his future. It's been some time since I sat and watched a baseball game, and longer still since I played, but despite that, the story of this pitcher and his teammates totally drew me in; it was just so compelling and real. Apple shows the team working together and initiates the reader into the intense working relationship of the pitcher and catcher. Ditch and his Class A team are larger than life when they're on the field, and watching them do what they love to do was a grand and memorable experience. Approaching Twi-Night is masterfully written, and the story line is first-rate. I had a marvelous time reading it. Approaching Twi-Night is most highly recommended.
