Appointed Time is the first book in the Sands of Time Trilogy by C.J. Peterson. In a top-secret clinic in Maine, nurses Grace Matthews and Ben Scott rescue two genetically modified infants named Blake and Holly from being tested upon by an evil scientist named Professor Noah Roth. Fleeing from the professor's clutches, Ben and Grace seek sanctuary in the remote East Texas town of Willow Bend. Assuming new identities as a married couple, Ben and Hope raise the kids as their own. Helping them hide their true identities and the extraordinary children is the County Sheriff Wyatt Reynolds and his secretary, Alexandra Murphy. But as Blake and Holly grow into their unique powers, another set of superpowered teenagers, Adam and Deanna, arrive that sets off an increasingly chaotic chain of events.
If you enjoy watching TV shows featuring superpowered teenagers such as The Gifted or Runaways, you'll have a blast with C.J. Peterson's first installment of the Sands of Time Trilogy, Appointed Time. Moving at a brisk pace, the plot moves through numerous twists and turns to keep you immersed in the story. The narrative is well-paced, and the shifts from somber dramatic moments to action-packed scenes feel seamless. At first glance, it feels like a survival story where the two protagonists flee to a new place to start afresh with two kids, but from the midway point onward, the plot moves in a completely different direction altogether. It keeps you on your toes for the rest of the book. Recommended to young adults who love superpowered protagonists.
