Annie and the Outlaw by Nancy Schumacher is an entertaining tale as Annie Callahan and Cane Smith come to terms about raising young Mark. Annie has cared for him since he was a newborn, but Cane is his biological father and demands custody. The one thing they agree upon is to do what is best for this active seven-year-old; take it slow. This throws many obstacles at them, driving them to question their decisions. Annie’s gift of seeing visions of the future has scared off all suitors but one; Jed Porter. With two strong-minded males competing for her attention, it surprises Annie when her safety is threatened. Can the man who was wrongfully jailed and the woman who refuses to surrender Mark come to a solution?
Nancy Schumacher writes this novella, Annie and the Outlaw, as part of her Montana Women series, representing a rugged country demanding strong and independent women to live there. Annie doesn’t think twice when she is introduced to Cane after they had jailed him for a crime he didn’t commit. But she wasn’t about to back down to him with Mark. This novella keeps up a fast pace as the couple runs out of time with complications on the ranch and a scorned beau who refuses to let it go. The characters are lovable, even Mark as he adjusts to Cane, though he doesn’t quite know how to take him. An excellent historical romance that prepares you for the next in this series. The author gives you a craving to read more about those who found love in this rough territory.
