Andres and His Rubik’s Cube Madness is a children’s non-fiction storybook written by Andrea Alvarez and illustrated by Ana Sebastian. Andres was a boy who became fascinated with the Rubik’s cube when he saw other children solving it. He decided he wanted to learn how to solve it and was very proud the first time he got all the colors correct. But he wanted to do more. He wanted to solve it quickly. Through persistence, study, and practice, Andres learned hundreds of algorithms for the Rubik's cube. His family and friends were very proud when the day came that he qualified for the National Cubing Championship by solving the puzzle in fifteen seconds. Full-color illustrations capture the characters, plot, and emotions of the story.
In Andres and His Rubik’s Cube Madness, Andrea Alvarez gives us a fun story of a boy’s determination to set a goal and achieve it though it took a great deal of practice and effort. In an age of instant gratification, it’s a wonderful story for young children to read. Andres is a happy and likable boy with many friends. His mother is loving and supportive. Her greatest pride isn’t that he achieves his goal, but that he doesn’t give up along the way. Persistence and steadfastness are important traits to encourage in young children. When they become interested in a hobby or activity which is fun and engages them, it can still be easy to give up in frustration in the face of a difficult challenge. Every reader will be happy that Andres didn’t. An enjoyable and inspirational read.
