All Things Slip Away by Kathryn Meyer Griffith is the second book in the Spookie Town Murder Mysteries series. Ten years ago, when Frank Lester worked as a cop, he chased after a serial kidnapper dubbed the 'Mud People Killer' whose victims were never found. The closest Frank ever came to catching the killer was one snowy night which ended with the killer escaping after Frank shot him, but no body was ever discovered. A decade later, Frank has found a new life in the quaint town of Spookie and has a budding relationship with artist Abigail Sutton. All that changes one day when a teenage girl disappears and the killer's signature mud clay figurine is found in a mail box. Frank knows the killer has returned, this time bent on revenge and targeting those he loves.
The side characters are quirky, but grounded, fitting perfectly into the town. They read as your next door neighbor and are easily likable. Laura and Nick have a heartbreaking place in the story, but they act as a second chance for Abigail and every scene they're in is endearing. The romance between Frank and Abigail is a slow flirtation that is sweet and a bit old-fashioned in feeling. Kathryn Meyer Griffith has an intriguing format, including the perspective of the killer and adding to the action of the chase. The town has a faintly supernatural tinge in the eccentricities of the characters and the aloofness of the killer who vanishes without a trace. This isn't a case of whodunit; instead the thrill and the mystery is in the chase as Frank and Abigail get closer and closer. All Things Slip Away is a gripping mystery, intense and eerie, pulling you in deeper until the very end. A must-read murder mystery!
