All My Stars is the second novel in the Knight Defense Christian romance series by Mallory Brown. Cordelia flees her wealthy and powerful family after being hospitalized with serious injuries by her repeatedly abusive spouse, about whom her family is in denial. Two years later, living under the name Amelia, working in a home-based business, and blessed with two caring friends, Cordelia is still in hiding and unable to divorce her husband. She meets a security expert and former Marine named Eric, who works with Alex Knight. Alex takes on Cordelia’s case, offering hope of a divorce. Eric offers self-defense lessons and an immediate physical attraction and romantic interest, though Cordelia refuses to flirt with any man while she’s still legally married. What will the future hold for her?
In All My Stars, Brown presents a sympathetic heroine and a hero (Semper Fi!) to match her. Amelia, as I came to think of her, is a courageous, strong, and loving woman who has learned to cope with life and wants only to be free of her painful past so she can move forward. Her wariness of her husband and father, who have the wealth and power to frustrate her hopes, fills the first fourteen chapters with suspense. I couldn’t put the book down for wondering what would happen next. While the tempo slows down after that, Brown’s narrative remains engaging, descriptive, and emotionally satisfying. The faith aspect is offered in small, natural doses which peak during a wedding. An enjoyable read. I look forward to more in this series.
