Tilly recalled VE Day. She sneaked out of the nursing home where she worked and spent most of the night dancing with Johnny, an Army captain. Then he proposed to her. She liked the prospect of marrying him, but dreaded meeting his wealthy parents, since she was a poor nobody, her parents having been killed in an air raid. She need not have worried as his parents welcomed her warmly. Happily married, she looked forward to many years with Johnny. But she wakes up in a room, and no longer in the 1940s. The doctor treating her tells her she suffers from Alzheimer’s disease, and for the last six years, she has been in a virtual coma. Unfortunately, Johnny had a stroke that left him partially paralyzed. Having her in a familiar 1940s environment, the doctor hoped her brain would repair itself. Eight of his twelve patients recovered using that treatment. Stunned, Tilly wondered if the procedure might work on Johnny and restore the damage done by the stroke. But both get more than they bargained for in All in the Mind by Jenny Twist.
All in the Mind is a delightful little gem of a novella, and Jenny Twist effortlessly draws the reader into the story with realistic dialogue set against totally credible backgrounds. Readers must allow themselves to be immersed in Tilly and Johnny’s life, and see the world through their eyes. The interplay between Tilly and Johnny’s mother is particularly interesting and heartwarming as Tilly accepts that she belongs to this family. This story is a worthwhile journey. I enjoyed All in the Mind and the unusual therapy approach. The narrative takes an unexpected turn when the perspective shifts to Kim Singh, a student of one of Tilly’s doctors. All in the Mind provides an entirely satisfying conclusion.
