After the Hunt is a debut poetry collection by Devin McGuire. The subjects are diverse: relationships, dealing with loss and personal musings on just about everything in the world today. McGuire’s reflections on his home and love of nature are also penned – whoever loves fishing and poetry altogether, this is destined for you.
The verses are brazenly straightforward most of the time as evident in Women - “I sucked face with an older woman last night and pitched a tent inside my pants.” His choices of words might upset the classic-minded poetry enthusiasts, but no doubt will get a cheer and even inspire today’s new and younger poets. I never thought that poems can make me laugh but some of them in this collection did. On the other hand, I’m personally touched by others that honestly deal with loss of loved ones, particularly in Sister, “A hole runs right through this heart holding onto, containing nothing and it hurts you know? / My heart’s not my only concern because my brain seems broken too / We won’t go near my soul / I haven’t seen it since you died.”
Devin McGuire's satirical writing takes on life in general, though some his poems can either put you off or entertain you. All in all, After the Hunt is quirky and at times sardonic, yet humbly honest in subjects of love, relationship and loss. A mighty fine achievement for a debut and I think Mr. McGuire is on the right track in his craft to produce a second poetry piece.
