How do you tell a story of love, lust, and finding yourself in as few words as possible and in a way with which your readers, if they are honest with themselves, can identify? You write it honestly from the gut, as Emmalyn Danvers has penned A Tendency Dark and Dangerous. Danvers is a poet-novelist, meaning she writes a complete story in poetic style...and it works...especially for readers who want to feel the protagonist’s emotions and live the rise and fall of the plot without wading through the clutter of long-winded descriptions and trying to remember who’s who and doing what.
There are only three characters: Evangeline; her good, reliable boyfriend Jesse; and her bad-boy lover, Landon. It’s a familiar triangle with Evangeline trapped inside: she loves Jesse; she might even marry him one day; he’s comfortable like a pair of favorite slippers. But he doesn’t set fire to her passion the way Landon can with a look, a word, a touch. Despite warnings from her friends, Evangeline is hopelessly drawn to Landon like a moth to a flame. She has so much to lose if she gives in. Does she?
If you’ve ever been caught in a similar love/lust triangle, oh how you will relate to Evangeline’s confusion and self-loathing, the anguish of loving one and wanting another. How many songs and movies have focused on this theme! Emmalyn Danvers's poetic approach to a tale as old as time is refreshing, graphic, poignant and impressive. A Tendency Dark and Dangerous is a minimalistic and unforgettable approach to an often-told story. The everyday, struggling human being I am understood it perfectly, but it was the poet in my soul who loved it. So unique!
