In A Tempest in Winter by Tony Knapp, Jason "Hawk" McCullough, a former prisoner with PTSD from his time in a North Korean gulag, endeavors to reintegrate into civilian life and reconnect with Lizzy, a CIA operative and his therapist. Hawk is on a dual mission: he aims to find Greg Ro, who was instrumental in his rescue, and locate the kidnapped family of Captain Elias Tacker, their late mentor. As Hawk leads a covert operations team, other issues arise with Lizzy. There is a great deal of guilt over the past capture. Their efforts ratchet up when they uncover a terrorist plot orchestrated by Pak Ro in London, threatening a series of bombings. With the stakes reaching a fever pitch, both Hawk and Lizzy race against time to prevent further attacks while juggling their relationship and a string of unresolved trauma.
A Tempest in Winter by Tony Knapp is the gift that keeps on giving. It is a tightly constructed thriller with a unique plot and strong character development, each one with their distinctive features. Knapp provides plenty of anxiety, some moments that are stylistically familiar like Lizzy rifling through an office for files while the sound of footsteps approaches, to more original moments that are fresh and exciting. Knapp's strength lies in depicting the psychology of his characters, allowing these triggers to insert themselves into their choices. The writing style is sharp, the settings are described cinematically, and the dialogue comes across as authentic. Knapp has crafted a standout thriller that is both thoughtful and thoroughly entertaining, taking readers on an exhilarating ride. I am looking forward to what comes next from his pen. Very highly recommended.
