A Study in Scarlet by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Narrated by Marnye Young is a fiction mystery audio book that would appeal most to a mixed audience of young adults and adults who enjoy Sherlock Holmes' stories. A man’s body is found in a house in South London. The corpse has a horrified expression, yet the body lacks any ordinary signs of violence on it and there is a word written in blood on a wall at the crime scene. Such a mystery requires a detective willing and able to see past the surface to uncover the truth behind the crime, so Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson are quickly summoned to the scene of the crime. Does the duo have what it takes to uncover who perpetrated the crime and bring the truth to light?
A Study in Scarlet is both well written and well narrated and it reminded me of the Sherlock BBC television series. This was my first time reading/listening to a Sherlock Holmes story, as my only prior exposure had been television shows and movies so I was unsure if I would enjoy it. I found myself surprised by how quickly I ended up being pulled into the story and by the fact that I ended up enjoying it more that the TV shows and movies that I have seen in the past. The author had a way of getting me interested in not just the resolution of the mystery, but also in the characters themselves. Overall, I greatly enjoyed this audio book and I plan to look for more Sherlock Holmes stories by this author and narrator in the future!
The narrator of this audio book was Marnye Young, an experienced voice actor who has narrated many audio books including, but not limited to “Hear Your Body Whisper”, “Murder in Containment”, and “The Scholar”. I found that Marnye Young did a particularly good job in changing her voice to suit the emotions of the characters and using her voice to differentiate between characters. The narrator played a large role in my enjoyment of this audio book as her voice truly pulled me into the story.
