Ahh, poetry. The genre of work that with just a few words on a page can truly take the reader to another place, to another time, or simply take their breath away. When reading the new collection by poet Judy Croome, A Stranger in a Strange Land, the reader will certainly experience all of these emotions. Using a vast number of poems, over one hundred in fact, Ms. Croome has created a collection that is tied together with the common theme of being an outsider in an unfamiliar setting, on the outside looking in. Utilizing a huge array of subjects and subject matter, from cats to the Holocaust, A Stranger in a Strange Land is a wonderful example of what a book of poetry should be.
I very much enjoyed Judy Croome's work. Delicately balanced, utilizing haiku and some more traditionally formed styles of poetry, and providing readers with subject matter that will make them feel and think, A Stranger in a Strange Land is a collection that will keep readers turning the pages, waiting to see what awaits them next. Not every book of poetry provides that same experience. The work is haunting at times, heart searing and sometimes mind wrenching, but oh, so worth the read and study. I highly recommend this lovely collection, and certainly hope that author Judy Croome is hard at work on her next piece in this same vein. I, for one, will be anxiously waiting for its release.
