A New Dream Arises by Gregory Kopp is part of the Kopp Chronicles. In A New Dream Arises, the author opens the American connection with the assassination of Abraham Lincoln at Ford’s Theater, and how Vice President Andrew Johnson felt about what President Abraham Lincoln wanted to do with the nation going forward, helping the Freedmen’s Bureau with Chaplain T.M. Goodfellow at its helm to assist freed slaves. While in France investigating the death of the Duke of Hamilton, Scotland Yard's Detective Richard Cordwell hears talk about matters in America that would be of interest to England and heads for America, without getting permission from his boss at Scotland Yard. The author holds the reader's attention as he weaves his story over the two continents drawing the reader in to find out what the link is between these two characters.
In A New Dream Arises, author Gregory Kopp accurately portrays a period in history from 1863 to 1868. This time covers the rise of Napoleon III as Emperor of France and how the Civil War in America is winding down. The author uses his characters with the precision of a surgeon wielding a scalpel. It was most interesting to read how the political problems in France affected certain titled families in England and certain historical instances in America. I found this book a real page-turner as the author holds the reader’s interest from start to finish with the unique way in which he portrays the history of the era through the eyes of everyday people. An interesting and unusual book, it is well worth more than one read. I enjoyed it and am looking forward to reading the next one in this series.
