Kimi Hall BEdEC was born and raised in the metropolitan city of San Francisco in California in 1981. Being raised as a biracial child of a single parent home, and surrounded by many different family structures and ways of life, she learned to accept these many differences in people as normal. Growing up, she was fascinated with the arts, creative writing and later studied performing arts until the early 2000s. She is now a devoted teacher and burgeoning author and illustrator of quality children’s literature. Her goal now is to create children’s books that help children feel represented in the world. The kind of books she would love to have in her own classroom.

In A Mother's Journey: A Story About How We Became a Family by Kimberley Hall, we have a new mother writing to her child about the struggle she had to bring the child into the world. She wanted a baby so badly, but year after year there would be no baby and this saddened her. First, she tried to find the perfect man with whom to start a family, but that didn’t work and still, there was no baby. Then there were times when a baby did decide to come but went away. Everything she did to have a baby failed and it upset the mother greatly. Finally, she decided that she wasn’t going to wait any longer for chance to play a part. The woman saw a doctor and was artificially inseminated. This does the trick and for nine months she carried the baby she always wanted until finally it was born into the world. To the mother, her baby is her greatest miracle.
I have to say that this is the first time I have seen this approach to telling a child where they came from and how they came to be. It doesn’t sugarcoat the concept or make it a whimsical fantasy, yet the story is very engaging and will grasp young readers' attention. I like this because I feel that girls and boys should learn about their bodies early on. Conceiving and having a child is a part of life as is the way a woman’s body works. It was explained in a way that a young audience could understand with illustrations that will keep the child engaged. While some people might find A Mother's Journey a bit too graphic and discussing conception in a way that isn’t usual, I think Kimberly Hall’s approach is brilliant. I can’t wait to read more of her work.
