Oh, the tangled webs we weave. That phrase was on a loop in my mind as I listened to A House Divided..A Reverend Curtis Black Novel wind up and then unravel. Two families are entwined together by a teenage pregnancy but that is the least of these people's worries. To what end will the First Lady of The Reverend Curtis Black, a glam-church pastor, go to see her paternal grandson? The answer will leave you hating the woman before the second chapter. But she is among others who have their own shady side. The grandparents are all well off by most standards. Her famous husband is as good at burying secrets as he is at leading the lost sheep to God. The other grandparents, while not as wealthy, are prominent in their own right. Neal is a neurosurgeon and his wife the poster model for the contemporary housewife. The baby and their daughter live with them as the father is off to a prestigious college out of state. Lost in the middle of all the chaos and devious behavior are the teenage parents who will eventually have to make some hard decisions in order to carry on.
Wow. Can I just say, "WOW"?! This is one of those books that in your gut you know must be at least partially based on somebody in real life. You will be drawn into Kimberla Lawson Roby's emotional roller coaster story line. I wasn't into the audio book two chapters before I felt anger, contempt, sorrow, empathy, and the need to reach out and slap a certain character in the face just for being themselves. A must-read!
