Viking hero Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III continues his memoirs in the sixth book in the How to Train Your Dragon series as told by Cressida Cowell. The young warrior-in-training is observing his 12th birthday. His hopes that the occasion will be a peaceful one are not to be realized. It all begins when he tries to convince his dragon, Toothless, to eat his spinach and driftwood. Not only are vegetables important, but wood is essential for a dragon’s ability to breathe fire. As Hiccup leaves for a burglary competition, he tells Toothless he must eat everything by the time he returns. However, when he arrives home, Hiccup discovers spinach scattered over the throne room where he left Toothless. The driftwood is still on the plate, but the small dragon has eaten wood, all right: ¾ of his father Stoick’s throne has been consumed. When the chief returns, angry because Bertha, the chief of the Bog-Burglars, had teased him about his tribe’s lack of burglarizing abilities, the sight of his ruined throne infuriates him even more. And when he discovers that Hiccup had been writing a book, Stoick’s wrath reaches a whole new level. There is only one book worth reading: How to Train Your Dragon by Professor Yorbish. This gives Stoick an idea: get a copy from the Great Grim Meathead Public Library. But he can’t simply walk in and borrow it, for the library is guarded not only by the Hairy Scary Librarian but 400 Meathead warriors and their deadly driller dragons. But taking the book would prove to Bertha that Hairy Hooligans are good burglars, after all. How will Hiccup help solve this conundrum?
Cressida Cowell has written yet another fast-paced thriller which will delight Hiccup’s fans. Readers will once again enjoy meeting the young hero and his friends and following their adventures. David Tennant’s lively narration is nothing short of delightful. Youngsters are sure to snap up the remaining two volumes in the series.
