When Bartholomew Goode received a diagnosis of terminal cancer, he knew he had limited time left to select a successor. However, Bart did not deem his family members deserving enough to inherit his sprawling estate and enormous wealth. Before his death, he devised a game for the Goode family to select a winner. Willingly or not, each member played the game, hoping to inherit his wealth. However, it ended in a dead body, one that stunned everyone involved. Can Chief Inspector Sofia Faraday solve the mystery and discover who among the disgruntled family members might be a killer? Find out in A Goode Inheritance, a murder mystery by Paula Welch.

Paula Welch masterfully portrayed the unique dynamics of the dysfunctional Goode family. The members behaved like chessmen, each dancing an invisible dance around others, measuring others’ moves before making their own. The plot, becoming increasingly convoluted as the story progressed, included secrets upon secrets and crimes masking other crimes. Old trauma, lifelong grudges, and vengeful schemes formed the book's core. The symbolism of tarot cards at the beginning of each chapter lent an element of foreshadowing. I loved the morally grey characters; some are outright vile, whereas others make the reader empathetic. Chief Inspector Sofia Faraday commanded my respect with her calm demeanor, shrewd instincts, and endless compassion. Entering the equation midway, she dominated the storyline. I recommend A Goode Inheritance to anyone who loves mystery novels or thrillers. Agatha Christie meets Jennifer Lynn Barnes in Welch’s book, mixing the excitement of solving confounding puzzles with the familiar anticipation of a whodunit.
