A Crack in the World is a work of fiction in the fantasy, speculative, and metaphysical adventure subgenres, and it forms the first novel of the Injira book series. Penned by author Deborah L. Rhodes, it is best suited to the general adult reading audience. In this highly atmospheric and tense adventure novel, we meet the central figure, Shona, who is born to the Ocan people in their cut-off society, where they hide from the rest of the world so as not to be influenced or infected by others' actions. But Shona’s life carries a dangerous prophecy, and after she doesn’t die, even from being buried alive, the Ocan people become desperately worried. They must recover Shona before anyone else discovers who and what she is.
Author Deborah L. Rhodes has crafted a fanciful, cinematic, and extremely poignant work that toys with your consciousness and your own ideas about the world as you read it, which was really refreshing and exciting to find in a modern speculative novel. One of the most striking features for me was the description of Shona’s actions and her relationship with the physical world, which always carried this ethereal air about it, and a very abstract approach that intensified the metaphysical elements of storytelling. I loved the voyage of discovery that the novel delivers at a good, engrossing pace and the overall messages we glean about the world and our own journey to find our place within it. Overall, I’d certainly recommend A Crack in the World, and I can’t wait to see what comes next in this fascinating series.
