A Cottage Called Tranquillity by Bernie Danaher explores a very sensitive subject people seldom ever admit to being in until it is too late or they end up in the hospital. The author explores the life of Frances McNealy, who is married to Liam McNealy, from a good Irish family. They have three children, all boys: Brendan, Cairán, and Fergal. Frances takes the reader on a heartbreaking journey through her life from start to finish. Having been brought up in a strict Catholic family, for her, marriage is for life, and there is no such thing as divorce. Frances is a delightful character whose constant companions are 'the Tart' and 'Saint Frances', after whom she is named and has lively conversations with. You realize that Frances knows something is not right with her marriage, but due to her upbringing, she will not quit.
A Cottage Called Tranquillity takes a drastic turn when Frances runs away to her friend Bridie and her husband Paul. Once away from Liam, Frances takes the reader on a journey of self-discovery. The journey is one that every abused woman or man takes. It is hard, and sometimes the outcome is good, and sometimes the outcome is not so good. The author allows Frances to lead the reader through her thought process, the chances she takes, and how she reaches the conclusion she gets to. Bernie Danaher gives the reader a twist in the tale that will have them cheering for Frances. This is the most thought-provoking book I have read in a long time as it made me realize that each case of domestic violence is different and each person handles it uniquely. This book is well worth more than one read and is perfect to give to someone who may be in a similar situation. An amazing read.
