Both of my parents are from Detroit, and I grew up in Erie, Pennsylvania, so I have a great deal of fondness for the Great Lakes and their beauty. When I first heard about A 1000 Mile Walk on the Beach, it sounded like a book I would really enjoy. The thought of a woman’s solitary walk along the lake sounded so intriguing. It wasn’t actually a solitary walk because she did have some company, and she met some locals along the way, as well. She shared her companions and new friends on the pages of this book that is written much like a journal. I liked how it was written because Loreen brings the reader along on her walk, shows us the scenery she is seeing and introduces us to the people she meets. She also shares her thoughts about the impact of humans on the health of the lake, but she does so without sounding like a wacky environmentalist.
Overall, this was an enjoyable walk to take with an interesting woman. Okay, maybe she didn’t walk the entire way, but who cares? She has done something that most people wouldn’t do, and she has been kind enough to share it with us; for that, I am thankful. This book was relaxing and enjoyable with plenty of history and geography to make this a well-rounded read. I really liked this reading experience.
