K.J. Field will make starry-eyed astronomers out of all of us with 5 Little Dwarf Planets: A Rhyming Solar System Book. In this picture book, we learn about the five most famous dwarf planets in our solar system: Ceres, Makemake, Eris, Haumea, and Pluto. Some are well-known to most space amateurs (we never forgot Pluto) while others are most likely less familiar like the egg-shaped Haumea. Each planet has a vibrant personality rooted in what makes them scientifically unique. How could a planet with a heart on its surface not make us smile? Every planet is accompanied by an easy pronunciation guide and stars filled with science fun facts. Whether your young reader is already enamored with space or you are searching for educational books to help bolster their love of science, this book is a perfect addition.

K.J. Field’s 5 Little Dwarf Planets is the kind of picture book I would have loved as a child, so I am overjoyed that I got to read it as an adult. Field won me over immediately with her sweet dedication to the dwarf planets themselves, where she recognizes their beauty and promises to share their stories. The love she has for these marvels of space shines through her writing and illustrations. The book perfectly balances accessibility for early readers through the pronunciation guide, beautiful paintings of personified planets, and simple vocabulary, while not shying away from more challenging and fascinating information about outer space. This is a must-have for science teachers, and a great book for kids to read on their own or with the older readers in their lives.
