I am a teacher and I believe in the power of education. I believe education can move things forward. From individual lives, to families, to cities, to nations, education can have a profound effect. There are a lot of things that go into creating any education system, but only two things that you absolutely must have: teachers and students. All of us have been students at some point in our lives, but if you want to get a feel for the other side of the equation, and know what the teachers are going through, then I recommend reading 310: In the Building by Chris Alper. Though we teach very different subjects to very different students in totally different environments, I found it helpful, amusing, insightful, and thoughtful. It seems teaching is teaching, no matter where in the world you are doing it.

Chris Alper's 310: In the Building basically describes one year of Mr. Alper’s life as a school teacher in the American public education system. I have never taught in America. I teach ESL, English as a Second Language to students in Asia. Right now, I’m in Thailand. I found the attitude of the students in 310: In the Building strikingly similar to students here. I like this book because it gave me a look at what my life might have felt like if I had decided to teach in the States. Chris Alper's 310: In the Building is well written, well organized, and, most of all, it has heart. I believe Chris Alper was a good teacher. I believe he did the best he could for his students, and in the end, that’s all any teacher can do. If someone is thinking of becoming a teacher in America, they should read this book.
