Zala the Slovenian Dragon is a children’s book written by Kelsey Clark with art by Valentina Felce. Zala wasn’t born a dragon but more than anything, Zala wants to learn to become a dragon. The only thing she needs is to find a real dragon to teach her how. This book follows Zala through many lovely Slovenian cities, landscapes, and caves as she searches for a true dragon. She finds drawings of dragons, paintings of dragons, and even a dragon sculpture that looks real from a distance. And everywhere, she meets kind characters who try their best to help her on her quest to find a dragon by telling her what they know about dragons and where to find them. Finally she meets an olm. In this charming tale, they become friends and help each other on their shared quest.
Even more than wanting to become a dragon, Zala the Slovenian Dragon by Kelsey Clark will encourage young readers to visit Slovenia. Zala is adventurous and determined. She appreciates every step along the way to her goal. She is grateful and enthusiastic about every adventure. The colorful art shows all the lovely places she visits. Best of all, the art shows the absolutely gorgeous cave where Zala finds the olm. I’m not going to reveal what an olm is – that’s one of the most lovely discoveries on Zala’s adventure. I assure you that olm are real, and they really live where this story says they do. If you go to Slovenia you can check this out yourself. Readers will be happy to read the supportive conversation between Zala and the olm when they finally meet and discuss their dreams. Their friendship leads to a new adventure that children will want to join.
