You Make Your Parents Super Happy! A Book About Parents Separating is a children’s picture book, written and illustrated by Richy K. Chandler. Children become quite anxious when their parents separate, with some even blaming themselves for the split. In such difficult times, it is imperative that their child knows that the separation is not because of anything they did or because their parents don’t love them anymore, but rather that sometimes parents are better when they are apart. Ensuring any child that they are loved is vital in order to avoid any sort of self-blame or damaging behavior from the child towards themselves and others.
Richy K. Chandler’s tale about how much both parents love and adore their child, regardless that their lives together will not be as an intact family unit, is well-written and tailored towards children aged 3-7. Watching your parents split up is one of the most painful things a child can go through, and one of the easiest things any child can do is blame themselves. I personally recall wondering if my own parents were separating because I’d left my bedroom in a shambles, had left my toys on the floor, or had accidentally dropped a plate or cup on the floor while drying it, then watching it shatter. All of the bad things come to mind, and one of the hardest things to do is to believe that you are not the reason they are leaving. I feel that You Make Your Parents Super Happy! is well-written and would be a great book to read to any young child whose parents are going through a break-up, making the stressful transition a little bit more bearable than it would otherwise be.
