You Can Fly, Little Bird is a touching children’s storybook by Tuula Pere with full-color illustrations by Alexandra Burda. Serene is a newly hatched chick, the last of three eggs in her parents’ nest. Her mother worried when she took so long to hatch compared to her older sister and brother and named her Serene because she was quieter than her siblings. As the chicks matured, Serene’s older sister and brother fledged and boldly left the nest in turn to experience the joy of flying and the excitement of seeing new things. But Serene was frightened by the noises and creatures in the forest around them. Eventually, her curiosity overcame her fear, and she flew, too, taking joy in being a bird.

In You Can Fly, Little Bird, Tuula Pere gives us a delightful tale in which a young bird finds the courage to fly and take her place in the world. The illustrations by Alexandra Burda wonderfully convey the beauty of the birds and the environment in which they live. The parents are portrayed as loving and caring, ensuring that Serene gets enough to eat despite her timidity. They are patient and encouraging, teaching her about the other animals in the forest so she won’t be afraid when she finally gets the courage to leave the safety of the nest. This is an inspirational story that can encourage children to accept their differences as they, too, find the confidence to take their place in the world.
