Rachel Catchings has done it again! She has written a classic children’s book about differences. In You Are Powerful, Rachel presents children as children of God. They may look different, move differently, speak with their hands, or need hearing aids, but they are all children made in the image of God. I use the term differently-abled and have for forty years because my son has uncontrolled epilepsy. He is also on the Autism Spectrum. Some children shied away from him when he was younger, but we did all we could to help children and adults accept, with open arms, those who are different. Rachel understands that unconditional acceptance and love are easier when we know the love of God. Since we are made in the image of God, we need to allow His love to shine through us.
The word “inclusion” is becoming more popular. While it often refers to gender identity or ethnic differences, it was initially intended to include the differently-abled. There is an old commercial that shows a machine stamping out identical items, then one that was different. The voice-over states, “Different is good.” It is time we realize that about people who are different. In You Are Powerful, Rachel Catchings presents many different reasons that could cause children to be differently-abled. This book can inspire the differently-abled to keep on trying. It can encourage the other children to accept and interact with them. This book is wonderfully written and will significantly influence children on how to accept and love each other. Rachel has done outstanding service for the differently-abled.
