Wounded Animals, the first book in the Whistleblower series, by Jim Heskett is an action-packed novella involving a mysterious company seeking to destroy the life of Tucker Candle for unknown reasons. Candle is a corporate trainer with IntelliCraft. Despite the drudgery, he maintains his position in the company because he has a wife, and a baby on the way. After meeting a mysterious stranger, who warns him not to go on his next business trip, Candle finds himself on the lookout, even though he goes against the warning. What happens next is a spiraling sequence of events, leaving more questions unanswered than not. A missing wife, dead bodies, and a deep secret will haunt Candle throughout the rest of the novella. Will he discover the truth?
I did ultimately enjoy Wounded Animals, which is a fast-paced read. Keeping in mind this was the first in a series, I knew several of the plot elements might not be tied up in a neat package just yet. Still, I feel like most of the novella was a tease, enticing the reader to want to pick up the next book to find out what the background of the entire situation was. I wish there had been at least a taste of what led to the circumstances of Candle being tracked by this mysterious firm. I kept waiting to see why he was targeted, aside from the obvious, only to come up disappointed at the end. However, there is no denying that Wounded Animals (the Whistleblower series) by Jim Heskett was well-written, with excellent descriptions and a captivating text. Will I read the next in the series? I think so.
