Working Where Your Heart Is: Finding Success Outside The Traditional Office by Kristine Hudson is a timely read in our post-Covid-19 world when working from home became normal. One of the things I loved about the book was that it did not advocate that you must leave the office. It may seem contradictory to the title, but it is what makes this book different from others on the topic of virtual work. The reader is guided through practical exercises, like starting with where your heart is and why you want to look beyond the cubicle walls and balancing the pros and cons of working in different settings. The author is generous in her examples of how things work in her #vanlife with her husband Brad. Both have different working styles, career choices, and employment settings. The author is a freelance writer stimulated by changing and inspiring environments. Brad works for a business with set hours, lots of scheduled meetings, and clear deliverables. Providing these practical examples of how they manage day-to-day gives readers a peek at the realities outside the traditional office. The insights are real, not just dewy-eyed dreams of traveling in exotic locales with money rolling in the minute you close the office door.
Working Where Your Heart Is helps readers learn more about what is driving their interest to work in a non-traditional space. It gives readers creative options to consider and provides a stronger foundation for success before choosing life on the road. Seeking to escape the nine-to-five grind, I had not considered the social and financial aspects in such detail, nor appreciated how time zone challenges for Kristine and Brad mean waking up to different time zones in the same van! If readers aren’t sure about what to do next, Kristine Hudson also sets out a middle option to side-hustle and get your feet wet before cutting the cord with their current job. The book reminds me of What Colour is Your Parachute but targets potential #vanlife or work-from-home converts. Read this easy-to-follow and super-digestible book and you will land firmly on a path where you can find success outside the office - if that is indeed where your heart is.
